Remembering Liz
Elizabeth Ann Green was our devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who was sadly taken from us on Friday 15th April 2022.
Liz, was a beautiful, talented and creative lady who loved to travel, eat spicy and exotic foods, tend her garden and watch tennis, but family was always number one.
Born in October 1940 to Nancy and Vincent, she was their first child, followed 4 years later by brother Chris. Liz always spoke fondly of her childhood memories and other than her funny stories of life with a younger brother, they led normal happy family lives,.
When Liz was 17 she was working at General Refractories in the typing pool, and there she met her good friend Ann. They both had a liking for traditional jazz so every Friday after work they would go to concerts at the City Hall. They would get there early to beat the queues and as soon as the doors opened they would rush to the front to get the best seats in the house, ON the stage.
Liz met Barry just two weeks before he was due to leave Stanley Tools. After first laying eyes on Liz he wouldn’t take no for an answer, and luckily his persistence finally paid off. They regularly went dancing at the Locarno on London Road, where Barry swept Liz off her feet and they married in September 1963.
In March 1969 along came Nicky and then Jo in June 1973. They had a great upbringing and had many happy holidays as a family. Holidays when the girls were young were mostly spent in Wales with Liz, Barry and both of their Nannans, visiting the northern beaches of Fairbourne, Barmouth and Aberdovey, setting up the wind break and sticking it out even in the worst of the british summers but sometimes the family would take a trip up Cader Idris and as the two girls explored the mountain, Liz would sit on the cliff top for hours, drawing and painting the beautiful scenery.
Over the years, Liz and Barry developed a liking for cruises and went on a total of 13 cruises, which took them from the Mediterranean to Alaska to the Caribbean and beyond. They both loved to travel; Disneyland, California, San Francisco, Grand Canyon, Vegas, Gibraltar, Spain, Italy, the Bahamas, and one of Liz’s favourites, St Lucia, once the girls had left home and they’d retired you couldn’t hold them back.
Liz’s other passion was her garden. The garden started off as a steep slope of clay with a few rosebushes and daffodils. But over the next 50 years Liz and Barry transformed it. Barry did all the heavy work creating tiers, decks, walls and patios, and Liz tended the soil and each plant and bush with dedication and love until she’d created an oasis of colour throughout the seasons with beautiful magnolias, camelias, rhododendrons, and the lovely blossoms from the apple and cherry trees.
Liz has 4 grandchildren that she adored, first she looked after Tom when Nicky was working, then a few years later, Jo & Chris’s boys, George, Harry and Edward. She did the years of school runs, and later on the tennis run with Ed, with a bacon sandwich for tea. She loved watching them all grow up and would be so proud of the young men that they have become.
We will remember Liz for all the things she loved but most of all in the spring, when the flowers start to bloom and we know that she'd be out in her garden doing what she loved the most.
